So purchasing tenants insurance (aka renters insurance) in the US was never a problem for me, you could do it online, most of the info needed was obvious or found in your lease, and if you and your roommate(s) banded together it would be slightly cheaper.
In Canada everyone in my situation appears to be covered by their parents' coverage automatically (grad students! who knew this was even possible!). Since I am not, and I am both contractually obligated to get tenants insurance (in the lease) and would prefer to be covered anyway I attempted to purchase it in the usual fashion.
And hit a wall - because I value all my worldly possessions at less then $30,000 they will not insure me. This seems ridiculous - but i'm guessing the automatic coverage everyone has only covers up to $30,000. So, ok, I just over value my possessions (can I do that?) and pay more . . .
But then they won't rent to me because I share the apartment with more then one person I am not related to! ARGH!
To be continued. . . .
